Skincare Journey with @mygglow

"INSTEAD OF DIVING DEEPER INTO LEARNING MORE ABOUT MY SKIN, I CHOSE TO COVER EVERYTHING WITH MAKEUP."

My love for skincare was sudden, unexpected but also the best thing that ever happened to me. Throughout my teenage years into early adulthood, my skincare routine was almost nonexistent. I did not treat my skin with gentle kind hands, instead using whatever cleanser I could find, using harsh scrubs and often forgoing moisturizer or SPF. While my skin was never considered bad or unsightly, I struggled with skin issues just like everyone else. My skin would one day be extremely dry and the next day it would be extremely oily. It was frustrating and instead of diving deeper into learning more about my skin, I chose to cover everything with makeup. So much makeup. I was extremely unhappy with my skin but little did I know I was in for a huge eye opener.

"I FINALLY GOT TO THE POINT WHERE MY SKIN WAS SOMETHING I WAS PROUD OF."

My skincare journey officially started in late 2016 thanks to my fiance who had bought me Korean face masks. At the time I thought they were silly and a waste of time but I decided to give one a go and I was immediately amazed at how my once dull, tired skin suddenly looked bright, dewy and bouncy. I was hooked. I began searching forums, blogs and whatever else I could find on skincare, mainly focusing on Korean skincare. I learned about the importance of pH in a cleanser, the benefits of different ingredients, how to differentiate skin types and just how important daily SPF use is!

It was all trial and error for me the following months. I would purchase cleansers that in turn would break me out, moisturizers that were too fragranced, serums that caused the worst cystic acne of my life (something I had never really experienced before) and sunscreens with an unsightly white cast. I was determined to find a routine that worked for me, one that nourished my skin while also chasing the dream of being confident in my own skin instead of covering behind foundations and concealers.

I eventually found holy grail products that turned my skin around. My skin balanced out and wasn’t overproducing oil anymore nor was it dry and flakey. I eventually got to the point where my skin was dewy, bright and most importantly: something I was proud of.

After months of scrolling through skincare accounts on Instagram, I decided to make my own account, appropriately named @myyglow, and it has grown into a virtual place of love, acceptance, knowledge and friendship. It has given me the chance to continue learning about products and ingredients. I’ve been able to discover brands and even get the amazing opportunities to work with brands that I have grown to love dearly.

My journey with skincare has brought me more than just skin I was proud of. It opened the door to the loveliest friendships ever, knowledge I never thought I would want or need and the most important for me, it opened my eyes to the importance of self love. My love and appreciation for the amazing products that have changed my life will never waver. I plan on being on a never ending quest for the dewiest skin out there and I hope you join me for the trip!

KEEP UP WITH NICOLE
